Thanks to the excellent work of coordinator Giles Douglas and Team Google, today's climb of Welch Creek Road was a fantastic Low-Key success!

In the women's field, McLovely Brown and Janet Gardner both beat the Low-Key record set by Lucia Mokres in 2007, Janet finishing ahead of her personal best from 2010 which had been the women's 2nd best time. It was a solid women's turnout on the super-steep Welch Creek climb, Nitzel Hagan wrapping up an even dozen finishers.

In the men's field, it was Sisters and Misters' Hanns Detlefsen who led the group with an amazing 22:23. The top 5 men, including Stefano Profumo, Bill Laddish who remarkably finished with a flat tire, David Collet, and Joseph Sullivan all finished ahead of Brian Lucido's existing course record of 24:08.

Add to this Bill Bushnell crushing his existing course record in the hybrid-electric, and Emma and Jonathan Dixon breaking the existing mixed tandem record of Illeana and Bob Parker, and you can see it was a very fast day.

And it wasn't just the bikes, with Gary taking 5 seconds out of his previous record-setting 2010 run time, making it a clean sweep of course records this year (not counting women's runner, for which we've had no entries). But this time he had competition, with Niall Fitzgerald not only running up the hill, but back down and all the way back to the Sunol school.

On the team side, it was Sister's and Mister's of No Mercy with a remarkable 382 points, led by Hanns, Carl Nielson, and Janet Gardner. The Brown Zone was second with LGBRC third.

In the MegaTeam score (all riders count), Sisters and Misters came up with over 1600 points, almost pulling even with series leader LGBRC in that standing. This was due in part to bringing 6 women to the event.

Also of note was Mark King riding the climb on a single-speed. Oof.

The bay area weather returned to normal for October - ie the forecast rain shockingly didn't appear - for this week's Low Key Hill Climb brought to you by team Google, and an android running around trying to find its ipad. We began the morning with a rollout to the base of Welch Creek road, featuring an audi following the peloton who obeyed the new 3 foot passing law and didn't act at all frustrated. We regrouped at the bottom of the climb with some helpful reminders from people that have ridden the climb before that you want to make sure you are in the small ring!

The prius lead-out vehicle set off with 4 passengers, only just making it to the top a scant 6 minutes in front of Bill Bushnell, whose time of 15:47 easily beat his 2010 time of 19:42. Hanns Detlefsen, the first unpowered rider got to the top at 22:23 - also the new KOM on strava - easily breaking the low key record of 24:08. Whilst the cows at the top eyed the android hungrily (seriously, they couldn't stop looking at it) the rest of the riders trickled up to finish, with a fair few sprints considering the painful grades below. Everyone who started finished the ride, including 2 mystery riders, one of whom got 12th place overall. Special mention to Bill Laddish who finished 3rd despite a flat tire.

Thanks to our volunteer crew, most of whom had been riding low key for some time but never run one of these before, and to the Sunol Glen School district for letting us stage in the elementary school.
