| Low-Key finish (Cara Coburn) |
Low-Key finally visiting one of the classic cycling mountains of the Bay Area, Mount San Bruno this week, and we were rewarded with fantastic weather and the spectacular views San Bruno has in store on a clear day.
Thanks to San Mateo County and San Bruno state park for working with Low-Key to put on this ride today. Just in time, the gate was opened for us, allowing riders in groups 1, 2, 3, and the tandem group to fly through without pause. The gate was accidentally closed before group 4 arrived, and so 20 seconds were subtracted from group 4 times to compensate after comparing how times from somewhat before to somewhat after the gate varied by group. Some group 4'ers went through the park vehicular entrance, which was a bit slower. Some riders were delayed a bit more due to congestion at the gate. Apologies to all, stuff happens in bike racing sometimes.
But otherwise the day was an enormous Low-Key success. 8 men and 5 women shattered the existing Strava KOM/QOMs for the Price-to-Summit segment, led by Ryan Sherlock (Low-Key's Irish import) in the men and Shaena Berlin (MIT Cycling) in the women. Stefano Profumo and David Collet were 2nd and 3rd in the men, while the women's podium was completed by Amy Cameron and Janet Gardner.
A big story today was the tandems, 4 in all, with Pauls Chuck and McKenzie producing the best time of the day with a scorching 16:43 but the mixed tandem of Emma and Jonathan Dixon, by virtue of Emma's being female, edging out the Pauls for the top tandem score on the day. Tandem scores are the average score of the riders on the tandem, and women's times are multiplied by 82.7% before calculating their scores. Excellent job by both crews in scoring over 102 points each. Also climbing the mountain today was Rich Hill (the sole remaining 100% club member this year) with his wife Kim, and the Von Kaenel team of Lynn and Will. All looked super-strong at the finish line.
Bill Bushnell led the hybrid-electric field today.
On the team side, it was Squadra SF with the lead today, followed by the always-strong Sisters and Misters, with local team and host of the New Years race to the same summit Pen Velo in third.
