Week 2 of the 2015 Low-Key Hillclimb Series

Week 2 marked Low-Key's first return to Page Mill Road in 4 years, and it left your humble reporter asking himself why it's been so long.

It was a fantastic day, with the low-altitude fog rapidly giving way to warm sunshine as riders climbed the initial slopes of the climb. And Page Mill always presents a special challenge, with its highly variable grades leaving riders to determine their personal pacing strategy. Do you go deep into the red trying to keep speed on the steep portions, possibly to follow the wheel ahead or to drop a following rider, or do you even out the effort, go slower on the steep portions, then try to sustain the level of effort on the flatter portions?

There were 6 groups of returning Low-Keyers and two groups of newbies. In the men's division, it was all about group 1 at the head of the standings, with a Low-Key all-star group led home by Colin Daw, US elite national road champion. Nick Bax and Stefano Profumo were very close behind, however. Indeed after a rocket start to the climbing, things held together surprisingly closely, with a second week in succession of a tactical battle, with riders getting gapped off the back then chasing back. But Colin pulled off the win at the top, beating Tracy Colwell's Low-Key course record by 5 seconds. The interpersonal racing perhaps cost Colin a chance at Ken Spencer's Strava KOM, however.

Among the women, it was a newbie emerging from group A (the first of the 2 groups for new riders): Stanford Cycling's Mirre Stallen finishing faster than Melanie Spath's existing Low-Key record. Sindy Cho, in her second race ever (the first being Low-Key Montebello) finished a super-impressive second out of group 3, just ahead of Janet Gardner, the two having worked together for much of the climb. Stanford's Grace Chuchia was fourth, also from group A.

In the tandem division it was Paul & Paul who finished in a tight sprint finish in the third group. Meanwhile, in the hybrid-electric division, it was Bill Bushnell finishing ahead of Carol Ordemann, who rode strongly but failed in her goal to pass her son-in-law David Collet.

On the team side it was Stanford & Sons ahead of Stanford Cycling and Sisters and Misters of No Mercy, with a resurgent Team Low-Key in fourth. This was the first time Stanford has made such a strong showing at the Low-Keys.
