Report

It was a great day on Purisima Creek fire road as a record number of Low-Keyers for a dirt ride came out to enjoy the excellent conditions the trail offered. Perhaps of all the dirt we've done this was the most balanced for the different bike types, with road bikes finding the limited dose of steepness, the generally solid traction, and the virtual total absence of wheel-eating ruts an opportunity to exploit their lower mass.

Instead of a single dominant mass start or isolated individuals today seemed to be mostly small organized groups, which was good because it allowed for friendly competition while dispersing the congestion on the trail.

It was a tight contest in the men's division with Murray Swanson breaking the existing Strava KOM time and finishing less than 2 seconds ahead of perennial Low-Key dirtmaster David Collet who also broke the existing Strava mark. The super-consistent Bill Laddish was a close third, with Carl Nielson also breaking the 20 minute barrier on his mountain bike. Among the women, ex-MITer Shaena Berlin let Stanford's Mirre Stallen, each coming under the existing QOM time.

But especially notable was the ride of Peter Colijn who rode from San Francisco then climbed the trail with a pannier full of doughnuts.

We had two other divisions today, with the Dixon tandem producing a remarkable result just finishing this challenging climb, in under 30 minutes. And Bill Bushnell, as has been his trend, walked the dirt at a remarkably brisk pace to lead the male runner division today before backtracking to take photographs.

Sisters and Misters were the top team today Janet Gardner, Jennie Phillips, and Carl Nielson leading the way. Bill Laddish-led Team CVC was a surprising second, while Low-Key finished ahead of 2015 Low-Key powerhouse LGBRC for third.

Thanks to all who came out today! The dirt climbs always mix things up and provide more variety to the series. Of the dirt climbs Low-Key has done, this was perhaps the most road-bike-accessible (Alpine Road a close second, but the bypass there is trickier than what's encountered here). So it turned out to be a great part of Low-Key 2015.
