2015 has been a year of remarkably good Low-Key weather even by Low-Key standards, with not even the threat of rain any week this series. And while Thanksgiving presented Low-Keyers with crystal-clear skies and remarkable views, at the summit cycling computers were showing 0C/32F; the lowest temperatures yet in Low-Key history, colder even than 2010. But with the sunshine and moderate winds, it was still a fine day for climbing, if a somewhat chilly one for descending, at least to the bridge 7 miles from the summit.

More than a few riders were apparently deterred by the cold, however, as the Low-Key field was clearly attenuated from Thanksgivings past. Consistent with the rest of 2015, however, there were still plenty of super-fast men and women in attendance: the competition was top-notch.

In the men's race, Zachary Ulissi went off the front first on the initial climb until he was caught just before the second, then again at soon after the start of the third until getting five kilometers later with five to go. Zack eventually faded from the top three as a persistent Chris Evans and a strong Blaise Hamel were able to drop him in the final 2 km. But it was Canada's Eric Wohlberg who was able to reach the summit first. Eric's been doing Low-Key Hamilton since 2010, in the midst of the battle every year, and also winning in 2013.

In the women's competition it was Katy Giles ignoring the cold to finish in a super strong time, with Ivy Wang, Shaena Berlin of MIT-West finishing an excellent third.

The top tandem today was Paul McKenzie and Susan Schroer ahead of second place Emma and Jonathan Dixon. And the top hybrid-electric rider was Bill Bushnell, Bill breaking the hour with his time of 54:58.

These were the fastest riders of the day, but everyone who rode today deserves kudos. It took a healthy dose of confidence to ride to the summit in the unusually cold conditions, facing the potential risk of ice on the descents along the way, but additionally the risk of the cold on the long descent back from the top. Fortunately Low-Key always carries jackets, etc, to the top for riders, something not every hill climb does even today, and that service was well-taken-advantage-of. But still sweaty from the hard effort to reach the summit, depleted by the over an hour of work, it's easy to become chilled.

Special thanks today for our coordinator Kevin Winterfield and volunteers Carola Berger, Pat Parseghian, Carol Ordemann, Bill Bushnell, and Stephan Fong. For them it's an even longer day than it is for many of the riders. They are the true Low-Key heros of this Thanksgiving.
